About Make UK

Make UK, formerly EEF, is a leading force in UK manufacturing, providing representation and training, including health and safety. With over 150 years of experience, they understand the sector's training needs and how to address them.

At Virtual College, we share a similar mission—creating digital learning experiences that equip individuals with the skills to succeed and drive business growth.

Recognising our aligned goals, we partnered with Make UK in April 2016, following a two-year collaboration. Together, we deliver technology-enhanced training solutions, expanding their offerings with impactful online learning.

The Challenge

In 2017, Fujitsu needed a unified approach to Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) training across its global operations, each with its own regulations and training methods. The introduction of ISO 45001 provided the perfect opportunity to establish a single set of workforce-wide behaviours while navigating language, cultural, and legal differences.

Fujitsu turned to Make UK for support, and in turn, Make UK partnered with us to develop a customised health and safety training programme that would instil a company-wide commitment to safe working practices.

Our Approach

A generic, off-the-shelf solution wouldn’t work—Fujitsu needed a fully bespoke programme tailored to its policies, legal requirements, and branding. The training had to be engaging, accessible, and, most importantly, drive real behaviour change.

To achieve this, we:

Aligned content with Fujitsu’s standards – Adapting our existing training, we rewrote courses to reflect their policies, terminology, and regional legal requirements.

Designed a recognisable, branded experience – Our designers incorporated Fujitsu’s fonts, colours, and visuals to create a seamless brand identity.

Used storytelling for emotional connection – The training featured real Fujitsu stories in three compelling chapters, highlighting past health and safety challenges.

Integrated interactive learning – We built scenarios, game challenges, and a serious game to engage learners and reinforce knowledge.

Ensured accessibility – The training was translated into six languages, making it effective across the entire EMEIA region.

This tailored approach ensured that Fujitsu’s employees not only completed the training but also embraced a culture of safety, creating lasting behavioural change across the organisation.

The final training programme was a highly interactive and engaging training solution. Overall it included one serious game, 10 health and safety e-learning modules tailored to different managerial levels, numerous animated Fujitsu stories and challenges, quizzes and practice questions throughout.

Refreshing change from the ‘usual’ types of e-Learning.

Looking to the Future

Going forward, the overall goal of the partnership is to provide organisations and learners with choice. A choice to learn how best suits them, be that face to face, online or through blended methods. It is this choice which makes it easier for organisations to engage their staff in training that will truly develop the skills required.

By supporting the development of employees, together we are helping organisations in the sector to be stronger and more resilient in a constantly changing world.

We needed to find a partner that could provide us with the technology and the expertise to deliver that on a global basis, and that for us was Virtual College.
